The judge told the reporter when he started covering court, "Nothing surprises me."
With over 30 years on the bench, she has seen a lot. It continues each day.
It is probably why she didn't flinch when a baby was held by the defendant during his bench trial on a domestic battery charge.
The defendant and victim have two children together. The youngest is about a year old.
They came into together and told both the prosecutor and public defender the accusation was made in a moment of anger. A moment of hurt. A kind of moment we all would like to get back.
Only two people know the truth of why the victim dropped the charges.
From the way they interacted with one another, they looked very much friendly to one another.
The judge called the case for trial.
The victim was called to the stand.
Before she went to stand before the judge to be sworn in, she took the child to the defendant, who was seated by his attorney.
During her testimony, the child's father bounced him on his knee. He listened to the mother of his child recount what happened the night of the incident.
When she was done, she walked over to the defendant and he handed the child back to her.
I was curious how the judge would handle the couple not having anyone to take care of the child while the mother was testifying.
The child was such an angel.
The man was found not guilty.
The victim said there was a lot going on at the time of the incident. She was fighting with another women and that woman's friends. Her child's father got into the fray.
The victim did not know if he hit her.
One thing the victim did say. She was angry at the time.
Her father's child was sitting in a car with other women. He was intoxicated. He was supposed to watch the child so she could go to work.
There was a lot of emotions packed into the scene.
Maybe she lashed out him by accusing him of battering her.
Anyhow. All was good in the end.
The couple walked out of the courthouse with their child.
That was not so surprising.
